Top Attractions in SLC You Don’t Want to Miss

Salt Lake City (SLC) is packed with things to do, explore, and experience—making it an awesome place to be a college student. Whether you need a study break, a cheap weekend adventure, or a new spot to check out with friends, the city has something for everyone. From mountain views to museums, here are the top SLC attractions you’ll want on your must-visit list.

1. Utah State Capitol

Sitting high above the city, the Utah State Capitol offers some seriously great views—perfect for snapping photos or taking a quick breather from classes. The building is gorgeous inside and out, and the free guided tours are a surprisingly fun way to learn a bit of Utah history without feeling like you’re in lecture.

2. The Great Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake is one of those “you have to do it once” Utah experiences. Head out for a chill walk, bring friends for a sunset view, or try floating in the super-salty water. It’s weird, cool, and totally bucket-list worthy for students new to the area.

3. Hogle Zoo

If you’re an animal lover—or just want something fun and low-stress to do—Hogle Zoo is an easy win. With hundreds of animals and special events year-round, it’s a great weekend activity that’s only a few minutes from downtown SLC.

4. Red Butte Garden & Arboretum

Located on the University of Utah campus, Red Butte Garden is a go-to spot for peaceful walks, pretty views, and outdoor concerts when the weather’s warm. It’s one of the best places in the city to unwind after a busy week.

5. Natural History Museum of Utah

Also located near campus, the Natural History Museum of Utah is full of cool exhibits on dinosaurs, geology, and the region’s past. The building overlooks the valley, so even the views are worth the visit. It’s perfect for school projects, rainy days, or just satisfying your inner science nerd.

6. Bonneville Salt Flats

If you have access to a car, the Bonneville Salt Flats make for an epic day trip. The flat, white landscape looks like another planet and makes for unbelievable photos. It’s famous for land speed records, but students love it for spontaneous road trips and Insta-worthy shots.

7. Downtown & City Creek Center

When you’re looking for food, shopping, or something fun to do, downtown SLC has plenty to offer. City Creek Center is the main mall in town, complete with a retractable roof, fountains, and tons of stores. It’s ideal for weekend hangs, class breaks, or picking up something last-minute.

8. Utah Museum of Fine Arts

Sitting right on the U of U campus, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) has everything from classic pieces to modern art. It’s an easy, low-cost way to get some culture in—and students often get discounted admission.

9. The Leonardo Museum

If you’re into creativity, tech, science, or interactive exhibits, The Leonardo is a must-see. It’s hands-on, constantly changing, and perfect for anyone who prefers learning by doing rather than sitting through another lecture.

10. Eccles Theater

Want the Broadway experience without leaving Utah? Eccles Theater hosts touring musicals, concerts, comedians, and other live performances. Keep an eye out for student-priced tickets and last-minute deals!

11. Fear Factory

For adrenaline-seekers, Fear Factory is one of SLC’s top haunted attractions. It’s rumored to be actually haunted, but either way, the multi-level haunted house is intense and super fun—especially around Halloween.

12. Clark Planetarium

Clark Planetarium is perfect for science lovers, space fans, or anyone looking for a free activity. Exhibits don’t cost anything, and the 3D shows and dome theater make for a fun night out without blowing your budget.

13. Tracy Aviary & Botanical Gardens

Located in Liberty Park, Tracy Aviary is a peaceful spot to stroll, see colorful birds, or relax outside between classes. With interactive shows and tons of greenery, it’s a surprisingly calm escape from city life.

Salt Lake City is full of unique things to do—whether you’re exploring the outdoors, checking out museums, or just killing time between classes. No matter how long you’re in town, these attractions are perfect for making memories, taking study breaks, and getting to know the heart of SLC. Add a few to your list and start exploring!
